Non-SAAS Software

So there's a list being made of Non-SAAS Software. What is that? It's software that does not require a subscription. So, you buy it once and you're done. Do you have an old machine that still performs certain tasks well? Well, you can keep that 10 year old software on it, because it's not SaaS.

The website is No Sassy. No Software As Service, but in a Sassy way. Some links are for free software, other paid, but all of it "installable" and more or less "ownable."

More information on SAAS: Software as a service is a business model to keep a steady income stream. While it's great for those running the software, it can be completely detrimental for the average user simply by cost alone. Long-term costs are incredibly high for SAAS.

List of: Important Events in Human History

I found this list very nearly compiled with an excellent set of significant events effecting humans.

http://www2.esm.vt.edu/~sdross/text/humanhistory.html
It looks like it's written by a "Shane Ross"
who appears to be a VirginaTech Associate Professor at the time of this posting.

Great list, plus other lists at the bottom of the page.

GearBest.com (incl. review of Credit Card Knife)

I randomly (or was it?) came across this website, GearBest from a Facebook AD.

GearBest Logo

At first, I was skeptical. It looks like a website which sells stuff from China and there are a lot that unfortunately scam people. So, I placed a small order of a product I've purchased elsewhere in the past as a test... A little wallet utility knife.

Credit Card Wallet Utility Knife
Credit Card Wallet Utility Knife (10pcs)
I decided to get the 10 piece set, wondering if the cases each one came in would be considered a piece. I did not choose the special shipping option and elected for the standard which took a few weeks. Thankfully, it actually came with 10 of the knives! Since receiving them, I've been giving them out to friends as gifts. They're sharp and made just like the ones I previously had. The instructions are in Chinese, but basically it includes:

Tools:
2 inch ruler
Bottle Opener
Can Opener
Wrenches
Flathead screw driver
Saw Blade
Knife Blade

Of course, it fits in your wallet. I gave them to a few female friends as well as many males. Be careful, the knife and saw are both sharp (as they should be)!

The website is in "Beta" version now. It has tons of products for very fair prices. I do believe you're bound to find something there you like. One note of advice - the "Log in" link is weirdly in the middle of the page and very tiny. If you don't log-in, your shopping cart empties upon browser closing.

Wolfram Image Identification Project

I recently came across a new search engine. An image search engine. You just drag and drop an image or browse to upload an image to their server. Their software scans it and tells you what it is.
While  you maybe familiar with Google's "Reverse" image search engine (click the camera in the search box to upload), in my opinion this is more accurate. It's better at determining what your image is, which may have great A.I. uses. Who knows, maybe one day it can do photo-manipulations and cleanup for me so I don't have to.

For the record, Google's is designed to give you a list of images similar to it. That's a use all on its own. They might want to get better image recognition for their "Glass." Their voice recognition is better than Apple's or Microsoft's however, but that's a different topic altogether.

You may want to poke around on the Wolfram page. They're doing a lot of exciting work in regards to programming, cloud computing and more. I'm deeply impressed.

Freemake.com Video Converter Downloader

Video Converter and Video Downloader (from web)

I've used and tested both of these on Win XP & Win 7 64bit and they worked fine.

Video Conversion and Downloader both work well, but as with many conversion software programs, there are sometimes things that are not converted properly. I've used this Free Video Conversion Software in conjunction other free converters and taken the best from each one.

Definitely Watch the multiple tricky installation of 3rd party software attempts when clicking through installation. I skimmed the click through and had to do a double take then and triple take to make sure I didn't accidentally install an add on or some weird software.

Computer Glasses or... Flux?

To protect our eyes from computer eye-strain... Sometimes changing the lighting may help. That's where Flux comes in.

I'm using Flux right now. I like it a lot on my LED backlit monitor, because it hurts my eyes sometimes. I like the little button "turn off for one hour" (in case you need normal monitor color). If anyone's eyes hurt after using the computer a lot, this is definitely worth a shot.

Latin Translations To And From English

I'm a lover of language, though you wouldn't know it unless I told you because I really only know one language. I dabble in Spanish, French, Chinese & of course PHP though :) The following site is a great resource for figuring out something in Latin:

Latin Word List
Latin to English & English to Latin Word Lists

A major bit of knowledge not spread well in the world is that the history of words (etymology) greatly inceases the understanding of words... At least until this point, it's been taught in public schools without acknologement: i.e. Students are taught prefixes and affixes which ties in greatly with etymology, but not taught where they come from, which could open the door to more knowledge even without more teaching. These prefixes bring us to another link!

InfoPlease.com
Latin Roots for Prefixes, and Suffixes

Three links in one day? Yes! Partially because it's been so long since I've posted and partially because there so much great information for etymology. This following link is more about etymology than Latin, but because much English does come Latin, it will be referenced frequently.

(Has roots of many words with definitions, but WATCH FOR POPUPS)

When you look up a word on dictionary.com they often have interesting little tid-bits of the words roots / history, but in the past I've had to battle pop-ups- to forewarn you. Sometimes it's actually worth the pop-ups though, but I personally can't spend any length of time there anymore. Your first few visits though you may find yourself unable to leave.

Koyote Soft - Free Software

Among the lot of free software, Koyote Soft offers is a "Free Videos To DVD" piece, which allows you to put your home movies on DVD really easily (but I haven't gotten the menu option to work on my actual DVD player, I have to hit "skip" instead of "play".

Koyote Soft
Get Your Free Legal Software Groove On

They also have a free CD ripper, which will let you take tracks off of your CD for backup or your MP3 player (where legal).

If you're in need of video conversion software, while not free, you can at least test out their video conversion software in the trial, then purchase if necessary. I've used their "Free Videos To DVD" software and their "Hot Jingle Player" before, both which work great. Purchasing the Hot Jingle Player is not an option right now though, as their link is broken for that particular piece and I tried contacting them to no avail.

All-in-all, there's some great free software on the Koyote Soft website, and although I haven't yet needed a piece of their paid software yet (except the jingle player), I assume their paid software works at least as well as their free software. Great stuff.

Also, you might want to check out my post on my Graphics Blog about another free bit of software for editing photos in a browser, Picnik! It's basically a "Cool Site", but I try to keep graphics oriented things over there a bit and didn't want to double post in case you subscribe to both blogs, that way you wont get the same thing in your inbox twice.

File Hippo

Like downloading stuff? Me too. Like downloading useful stuff more? Me too! We're so much alike- you and I. That's why I'm providing you with a nifty link to the File Hippo. We can ride on it together. Hippos are big, so we can both fit on it.

File Hippo
(Ride the hippo with me!)

Although it appears to be a website to stay updated on downloads. I think it's something more than that-and better than that. They seem to have very short and accurate reviews (time-saving!) of the downloads and many of the programs are new to me, but look stable, fun to try and most of all- useful!

While Mailwasher can be checking my email for spam in my mail client- Thunderbird, I can be listening to music with SUPER and riding the hippo with Opera- e.g. surfing the web ;)

- Scratch the below "Post Script" note - Things not going as planned for now. -

P.S. I may be switching this blog over full time to my main website, http://Chexed.com/ I just want to give you the warning so if you subscribe to my blog you wont be surprised when you land at Chexed.com. I'm twice as friendly there as I am here though and half as funny- so you have nothing to worry about. Ok, so sometimes I'm funny there maybe. I'll be redirecting my feed here to pick up at Chexed.com.

If you have any thoughts on this please let me know! Thanks! David
